The Poop Cleanup Girl
We need to understand that Dog Feces are not like cow manure or compost.  It Cannot and Should Not be used as a Fertilizer.  The feces of a dog can carry many bacteria that may cause serious illness to an animal and a human.

The most common and widely known to us are Heartworm, Tapeworms and Salmonellas.

Heartworm - You know that you get your dog tested for Heartworm because it can cause Congestive Heart Failure.  In rare cases a human can get it where it migrates to the lungs.

Salmonella is also very common to us. Normally we think of it as something we get when we don't prepare food sanitarily, but it can also be passed to us from dogs and cats through their feces.

Tapeworms - These usually occur when a dog swallows a flea through grooming or biting and itching.  Make sure your dog gets flea treatments, but also keep his environment free of pests with an All Natural Enzyme Treatment.

What can be done to control tapeworm infection in dogs and to prevent human infection?

  1. Effective flea control is important.
  2. Prompt deworming should be given when parasites are detected; periodic deworming may be appropriate for pets at high risk for reinfection.
  3. All pet feces should be disposed of promptly, especially in yards, playgrounds, and public parks.
  4. Strict hygiene is important, especially for children. Do not allow children to play in potentially contaminated environments.
  5. Get your animal's environment treated with an All Natural Enzyme Treatment that keeps away Fleas, Lice, Ticks and Mites

Lesser known, but just as dangerous are:

Cryptosporidiosis and Campylobacteriosis - causes diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and dehydration.  It is COMMONLY picked up by humans from dogs by Feces to Mouth.  That sounds disgusting, but think about when you're cleaning your yard or throwing the ball for Brutus.

Toxocariasis - This is more common in kids.  This is a roundworm that can be transferred to kids when they play in area with dog waste on the ground.  This nasty little Round Worm may cause vision loss, rash fever or cough.  It can be treated.

Pet waste has been labeled as an Environmental Polutant by Scientists.  Studies have shown that rain and sprinklers are dissolving it into the ground and it becomes a major contributor to polluting the water supply

Overall, what we all need to understand is that dog waste is not only disgusting but can be unhealthy and dangerous for your pets and your family.  The greatest risk is to children, but anyone walking barefoot or throwing the ball for the dog can pick up a parasite.  They can live a long time in the lawn and they can pass from pet to pet very quickly.   Just as soon as you get one on anti-biotics, another pet will begin showing signs of the parasite.
